Much as it is advocated that Communication is key to the growth of any organisation especially in developing relationships across the cadres, There are still some things that are taboo, a no go area to be discussed with your superior or your Employer.
Here is why, the self- survival instinct of your Boss will come play and will use the information you give out to first protect him/herself and then the organisation. No employer of Manager would want his Business or Career to ruin on account of your information.
These are the Nevers:
- Your long term career plan if its going to affect his job or Business, you may lose your job earlier than expected because what will be paramount is to shop for your replacement so that there wont be lapses.
- Also how do you tell your Superior, that you look forward to being in his seat in the near future especially in an organisation where there is ceiling in career growth? Just How?
- Never tell your Boss you are job hunting except he/she is your Mentor and you have a personal relationship with.
- Don’t ever tell your Boss what a colleague told you in confidence except it will affect the Business. What makes you think your Boss will trust you? If you can break a colleague’s trust, you can also break you Boss’s.
- Don’t share personal gossip, it is irrelevant. How will it grow the Business?
- Personal Financial Situation. Once you start approaching your Boss. 2 things will pan out: That you are a beggar or you are already job hunting for a better pay. It is ok if you are discussing to be able to access loans or Salary Advance if your organisation gives such.
- This one is strong, Don’t ever give your Boss an ultimatum, He wont forget. Never! No one likes that. Don’t gang up, It will backfire.
- Don’t ever complain about your Management or Leadership team with your Boss. He is part of it.
- Never tell your Boss how to deal with another employee if he doesn’t have issues with the person. You will be the first suspect with ulterior motive
- Don’t give your Boss the Impression that you are overqualified for a particular position, look for another job if you feel stuck.
