Does your boss lie to you?

Truth is there is no industry that Bosses don’t lie. E shock you?

See its just the degree that varies. And the reasons are also different. Pause: Not all Bosses do but greater number are guilty.

While some lie to protect the image of the Organisation or keep staffs from seeing how bad their books look.

Some lie on deadlines so that you can turn your tasks in early

Some are perpetual liars who do so to keep their subordinates permanently under.

Some steal their subordinate ideas and pass it on as theirs. Some lie to kill their team’s idea so they wont shine.

Some lie to get someone fired just because they feel threatened

Some will lie just so you stop bothering them at work place.

I have heard phrases like: “I had to do it to save the Organisation” “ I will look into it” “ I will get back to you” “ You almost lost your job, I saved you” wow! Just so you become loyal forever.

Lying in workplace is two way issue.

While the Boss lie, the subordinate is equally guilty.

I have received a message from a staff that she was too ill to make the office and bumped into her at Cold Stone Creamery.

Some lie on their family [ some people’s parents have died more than once} chai!

Some will lie on the tasks given to them. Then you will hear “I am on it

Types of Lies

According to Forbes, different types of lies exist;

  • Small lies: That can be overlooked
  • Social Lies: also called white lies to keep up the momentum
  • Big Lies: Cant be forgiven, Cant be forgotten especially in workplace
  • Lies of Omission: When you deliberately hid a significant information which is critical to decision making
  • Malicious lie: Lies told to destroy another one’s career
  • Defensive lies: to evade punishment or protect yourself
  • Lies of Exaggeration: When you claim you can do what you are not capable of
  • Protective Lies: When you lie in orther not to hurt someone’s feelings
  • Blatant Lie: A lie that is so glaring that it is immediately exposed
  • Destructive lies: Sowing distrusts and destroying relationships

Handling Liars at workplace

Let us establish the fact that lying damages strong workplace Relationships. When there is trust, there is development, there is growth, bonding, Peace and happiness.

As a Manager, let your staff trust you. Communicate, hold meetings and open up to them, you will be shocked at how they will rally round and support you. Where you are weak, identify some of your team members who are stronger and work with them to improve your capacity. No one has the monopoly of knowledge.

As a Staff, lying to make others bad with your superior will boomerang one day. It’s a fact. Be truthful where you are lacking and ask for help.

When you can’t make work, confide in your superior, ask for help.

Don’t be off work for very flippant reasons.

If your superior’s lie is denting your image or may put your career growth in trouble, document your activities to avoid stories that touch.
